Rinse and cut your assorted seasonal fruit
seasonal assorted fruit of your choice
Cut each fruit into squares and place on the kabob skewers. (For more of a "grill" effect depending on the type of fruit you chose, you can place the fruit kabobs on the grill for a few seconds to get the "grill lines") Put fruit kabobs on plate, or in a storage container, cover and put in refrigerator until ready to assemble and serve Now dump the blackberries and raspberries in the bottom half of the watermelon, cover with plastic wrap and put in refrigerator until ready to assemble and serve.
Assembly of Watermelon Grill
Now you will need 6-8 shish kabob skewers for the actual grill portion. (This may vary depending on the actual width of your medium watermelon.) Poke each stick through the top of the grill base just slightly below the rim. (Make sure you are not going to close to the top as it will break through the rind and will not give you a sturdy grill base)
Once you have each stick pushed through using kitchen shears or a sharp knife cut the ends of the sticks to make flesh with the watermelon
1 small Watermelon
Now you are ready to put in the celery stalks for the legs. 4 to use now and 4 to have as back up. You can't have a grill without legs.
4 stalks Celery
For the grill handle, you will need to cut the extra rind you took off the top portion into a half circle shape.
Take two toothpicks or you can use the extra shish kabob sticks if they are long enough and place them in each end of the half circle and place on top of the lid for your grill handle. Now you can leave the grill top just as an extra piece and lie it next to the grill base for presentation or you can attach it to top of the base piece and make it look like it's hanging.*
To make it look like your grill lid is hanging you will need two more kabob sticks. One will need to be longer than the other so your lid will tilt a little.
Cut the kabob sticks to your desired length and place them standing up into the rind of the bottom portion of your grill.
Now you are ready to place your grill lid.
Assembly on the GO!
If you are traveling, it is best to follow the instructions above, take the pieces with you separately. DO NOT put the celery stalk legs in until you have reached your destination. This is to make sure they do not break. Make sure you packed your extra celery stalks for back up.
Once you have reached your destination, start assembling your grill.
Optional
For an adult version try soaking your fruit of choice overnight in some of these great liquors.
