Winter Solstice marks the first day of winter for those living in the Northern Hemisphere. The first day of winter is the shortest day of the year with the smallest amount of sunlight.

In some cultures the winter solstice was an opportunity to create light or goodness in the face of darkness or evil. Others consider this the Yin: A time to slowing down, to reflect, honor “being” over “doing”. Allowing us to connect deeper to our intuition.

Others may include this day in their Holiday Celebrations by putting up their holiday decorations and celebrating with family and friends.

History

The Winter Solstice has been marked by festivals and rituals to symbolize the death and rebirth of the Sun. With the gradual waning of daylight hours starts to reverse and begins to grow once again.

Since ancient times cultures have been celebrating Winter Solstice, even the stones at Stonehedge are aligned with the sunrise or sunset of the Solstice.
