This quick and easy recipe will be a nice centerpiece for your St. Patrick’s Day dinner.

What better way to celebrate St. Patrick's Day dinner than with Irish Soda Bread. This quick and easy recipe will be a nice centerpiece for your St. Patrick's Day dinner.

Equipment

  • 1 Large mixing bowl
  • 1 Silicone baking mat
  • 1 Cast Iron Pan or Dutch Oven

Ingredients
  

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour Set aside ½ cup
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 4 tbsp butter cubed
  • 1 egg beaten
  • 1 ¾ cups buttermilk

Egg Wash

  • 1 tbsp Sugar in the Raw
  • 1 Egg whites

Milk Wash

  • 1 tbsp milk
  • 1 tbsp Sugar in the Raw

Irish Cream Wash

  • 1 tbsp milk
  • 1 shot Irish Cream
  • 1 tbsp Sugar in the Raw

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 425 °F
  • In a large mixing bowl mix together flour, sugar, salt and baking soda
    4 cups all-purpose flour, 1 tbsp granulated sugar, 1 tsp salt, 1 tsp baking soda
  • Using clean hands, work the butter into the flour mixture until it becomes coarse.
    4 tbsp butter
  • Add the beaten egg and buttermilk. Mix until it forms a sticky stiff dough.
    1 egg, 1 ¾ cups buttermilk
  • If the dough is still too soft add ¼ cup of flour at a time and mix until you have a sticky but stiff dough
  • Optional: add Currents or Raisins
  • Flour your hands and transfer the dough to a lightly floured baking mat or flat surface and shape into a round loaf. Don't work it too much or it will be tough.
  • Move the loaf to a cast iron skillet or Dutch oven. ( You can also use a cookie sheet). Score the top with an "X" to let the steam escape.
  • Brush the top lightly with either Milk wash, Irish Cream wash or an egg white wash and sprinkle with Sugar in the Raw
    1 tbsp Sugar in the Raw, 1 Egg whites, 1 tbsp milk, 1 shot Irish Cream
  • Bake for 35-40 minutes until bread is golden and the bottom sounds hollow when you tap it. Ovens may vary check your bread, if it is not done put back in for 5min increments until fully cooked.
  • Let cool slightly but serve warm.
