Himalayan Salt Lamps
Himalayan Salt lamps are carved salt crystals from the Himalayan mountains, and made with a hole for a light. The lamps are known to aide with many health issues including asthma, allergies, and mental stability. Some of this logic is hear say, other beliefs are holistic.
Some benefits of a Himalayan Salt Lamp
To some the calming ambience of the soft pinkish glow is rather soothing and helps with relaxation and de-stressing after a hard days work.
You can leave your lamp on all the time, that’s right 24hrs 7 days a week. Doing this allows you to get the full benefits out of your lamp
The salt lamps are also known to put out Negative Ions into the air. Using the heat from the light and the moisture in the air the salt lamps are like a natural humidifier. The salt being a natural mineral, absorbs the moisture in the air and the heat from the light evaporates the water absorbed on the surface and releases purified vapors back into the air leaving behind pollutants on the rock.
Negative Ions can be found in nature and are the cause of positive mood changes when absorbed at high levels. These molecules are in the air or atmosphere charged full of electricity and found in UV rays from the sun, around natural water resources like waterfalls or the electric charge you feel after a thunder and lighting storm.
Another benefit not often talked about is Aromatherapy. Himalayan Salt lamps can also be used as essential oil diffusers. With many essential oil diffusers you can use a blend of oils diluted in water and can be inhaled etc. But with salt lamps you can put the essential oils right on the lamp and the heat from the light will diffuse the oil and fill the room with the aroma of the oils.
Some suggestedessential oils to use on the lamps
- Basil
- Musk
- Bergamot
- Eucalyptus
- Lemon
- Tangerine
- Rosemary
- Sage
- Thyme
Real or Fake?
If you can before purchasing make sure to research the origin of the lamp and verify that it is a true Himalayan Salt Lamp from the Himalayan Mountain Range. If the origin is from anywhere else then it is not a true Himalayan Salt Lamp and will not benefit you in the long run.
True Himalayan Salt lamps are fragile but hard. They can crack, chip or even shed salt if bumped. Fake lamps have a tendency to be more durable.
Another way to tell if your lamp is true Himalayan is the luminosity it puts out. A true Himalayan Salt lamp will put out a dull, dim light. Enough to be able to allow you to put it in the bedroom and still get a good night’s sleep. However a fake lamp will put off more of a powerful glow enough to light up the room and the light will be uniform throughout.
If you wipe your Salt lamp down with a wet rag a true Himalayan Salt lamp will look like it’s weeping and there should be some reddish/pinkish discoloration left on the rag. If your lamp holds water well then it is not a true Himalayan Salt lamp.
