DIY Halloween Decorations

These simple DIY Halloween Decorations are so easy and inexpensive. Most of the items were purchased at the Dollar Store, or I had laying around the house.

Truth be told a lot of things I may have also received from my mom as she would purge through her Halloween decorations from all the times we were kids and as the years went by. Which is not a bad thing, I have found a lot of random things to “up-cycle”.

Nightmare Before Christmas spell jars (2)

Nightmare Before Christmas Spell Jars

Nightmare Before Christmas has to be one of my all-time favorite movies. Not only do I get to watch it for Halloween, but I get to watch it at Christmas too.

We were having a crafting day and our theme that day was Nightmare Before Christmas.

Here are Sally’s Spell jars.

What you will need
  • Black Acrylic paint
  • White Acrylic paint
  • Mason Jars with rings
    • Any size will do I choice the 32oz Jars for this project but depending on what you want you can choice any size.
    • Make sure the jars are smooth and not textured. I happen to had the circle branding on the side which is also fine as you an use that for some of your designs.
  • Paint brushes
    • Large and small
Instructions
  • Wash and dry jars completely, put rings on jar.
  • Make sure the jars are dried completely and paint black, including the rings. You may have to do a second coat depending on the thickness of your paint.
  • Allow to dry.
  • If your jars has the circle branding on the side outline that with white paint and fill in. You may have to do a few coats.
    • If you have jars that are just smooth you will have to draw your circle
  • To paint the Frogs Breath you will need to draw a square with white paint and fill in. You may have to do a few coats.
  • Allow to dry.
  • Once jars are dry to the touch using a pencil begin to draw your spell labels
  • After you have finished the outlines of your spell labels, trace back over them with black paint.
  • Allow to dry completely overnight. Use Matte finishing spray to seal the paint.

Cauldron

The fun thing about this cauldron is that it has been used for many things, but one of my favorites is on the fireplace mantel. Another simple and inexpensive DIY decoration.

We change it up every year to something different. I always look forward to the next year when we pull out the decorations to see what the cauldron will be brewing.

Bubbly Cauldron

What you will need
  • Cauldron
    • The size of your cauldron all depends on you and the area that you will be placing it. Ours happens to be a small cauldron.
  • Bubble Wrap
  • LED lights
  • Assorted Halloween decorations etc.
    • Spiders
    • Eyeballs
    • Bones
Instructions
  • Fill cauldron with crumbled up paper or plastic grocery bags.
  • Put LED lights on top of paper or grocery bags. Make sure the LED lights do not get hot.
  • Place the bubble wrap on top and position to how you like to make it look like a bubbly cauldron
  • Now it’s time to put on the finishing touches. Make your cauldron your own, whether you choice accessories for a specific “spell” you found or just what you had lying around. That’s what makes it fun.

Potion Goblet

A spell would not be complete without the goblet to drink it from.

I’m not sure where I got this goblet from, but you can find something like this or close to it at your local thrift store, for an inexpensive purchase. You can also find some on Amazon as well.

This is also another decoration that we change every year.
